Title of the workshop:
Language Centres and local or regional language policy. What benefit can a communal Council of Languages bring?
The initial question was: Must local or regional cooperations of a Language Centre be limited to its university, to higher education - to education? Can it not be part of its language politics to cooperate with local/regional institutions of economy and society and also with European Cultural Institutes (Institut Francais, Instituto Cervantes, Goethe-Institut)? As an answer to questions like these the Council of Languages of Bremen (Sprachenrat Bremen e.V.) was founded about ten years ago. The workshop will inform about the Council of Languages of Bremen and discuss it as a possible example for local and regional language policy of other European language centers.
Language of instruction:
Knowledge about advantages of a local/regional language and – if wanted – foundation of a SIG working on the subject.
